Rinaldo Capra

Artist's Portraits

2 - 24 September 2010

On occasion of the Brescia Photography Biennial, the Fabio Paris Art Gallery is delighted to present “Artists' Portraits”, a photographic project by Rinaldo Capra in celebration of the ten year anniversary of the gallery, which opened on 11 May 2000.

Over the last seven years, Rinaldo Capra has systematically photographed the artists and projects that have featured in the Fabio Paris Art Gallery: from Bruno Muzzolini to UBERMORGEN.COM, from Andrea Caretto and Raffaella Spagna to the collective Alterazioni Video, from Eva and Franco Mattes to Janez Jansa. His images spring from the effort to enter into each artist’s work, interpreting its poetics and conveying its essence in the photographic image.

«When I look at a work of art, above all contemporary art”, explains Rinaldo, “I start wondering about the artist. Who is he or she? How does he or she work? What relationship is there between his or her appearance and expression and his or her work, work that impresses and amazes me, stimulates and startles me for the “otherness” that it manifests?

Going to Fabio Paris’ gallery enables me to satisfy my curiosity. I meet with the artists that animate it, observe their emotions and enter into their projects. I can portray them and seek out the relationship between human and work of art that fascinates me so much.”

The portraits in the exhibition are the result of these encounters, often initiated in the gallery and then continued in Rinaldo Capra’s studio, where the artists are invited to set up their work, interact with it and reveal their gaze to the photographer. The exhibition is accompanied by a book that gathers all the portraits exhibited and presents the exhibitions staged from 2000 to the present at the Fabio Paris Art Gallery.
